We set out to carve a vineyard into a rocky slope, but the hill was bent on vexing us. It took handheld spud bars to get at the soil. It gave us a thousand reasons to quit, to move on to something easier. Until one day, as the sun set over the Mayacamas, the valley awash in golden light, the wisdom of this difficult piece of land dawned on us: This isn’t an obstacle, it’s a lesson in greatness.

Welcome to Travail.
